Extending our service to humans

Here at Calder Vets, we’re known for our state-of-the-art facilities for animals but we’ve recently purchased potentially life-saving equipment to prove our sense of care extends to human healthcare.

We purchased the automated external defibrillator (AED) for use at our Dewsbury hospital, to provide emergency treatment to anyone suffering from cardiac arrest.

Tracy Hemingway, practice manager at Calder Vets, said: “We take pride in delivering the highest level of veterinary care and treat every pet as part of the family – and this extends to the pets’ owners.

“We believe it is our clear duty to care for our animals, their owners and the vets who come to our practices, which is why we purchased the defibrillator, so we have the ability and equipment to offer urgent care to those people within our community.”

The device works by delivering an electric shock to the heart through a patient’s chest and is a crucial part of treating an attack, as giving defibrillation within the first few minutes gives the patient the best possible chance of recovery.

Results show heart attack sufferers have a far better chance of survival if the device is used within minutes of them taking ill, so having a defibrillator at Calder could now see our vets saving lives on two fronts.
